Creating Custom Themes That Match Your Church

Why Custom Themes Matter

Your church's visual identity extends beyond your logo and website — it includes how you present content during services. A consistent, branded theme on your projection system reinforces your church's identity and creates a more polished worship experience.

Starting with Your Brand

Before opening the theme editor, gather your church's brand elements:

  • Primary color: Your main brand color (often from your logo)
  • Secondary color: A complementary accent color
  • Font preference: Serif for traditional, sans-serif for contemporary
  • Logo: For optional overlay on slides

If your church doesn't have formal brand guidelines, pick colors that match your worship space — warm tones for wood-accented sanctuaries, cooler tones for modern spaces.

Building Your Theme

WayPresenter's theme editor makes the process visual and intuitive:

Choose Your Background

Start with the background, as it sets the entire mood. Dark backgrounds with subtle gradients work well in most lighting conditions. If you use an image, apply a dark overlay (60-80% opacity) to ensure text readability.

Select Typography

For scripture text, we recommend a serif font at 48-60pt — it conveys authority and tradition. For song lyrics, a clean sans-serif at 44-56pt works better for singability. Always test from the back of your room.

Add Your Branding

Use your church's primary color for accents — scripture references, section labels, or subtle text glow effects. Don't overdo it; branding should be present but not distracting from the content.

Creating Seasonal Variations

Keep your base theme consistent but create variations for seasons:

  • Advent/Christmas: Add warm gold accents, subtle snowfall or candlelight backgrounds
  • Easter: Bright, hopeful imagery with sunrise or floral elements
  • Regular services: Clean, neutral design that doesn't distract

Testing Your Theme

Always test your theme in the actual worship space:

  1. Display sample text from the projection booth
  2. Walk to the back row and check readability
  3. Test with room lights on and off
  4. Check with both short verses and long passages
  5. Verify it looks good with songs too

Sharing with Other Churches

Once you've created a theme you love, export it and share it with your church network. Go to Settings > Themes, right-click your theme, and select Export. The .wptheme file can be shared via email or file sharing.
