Display Issues

Display Issues

WayPresenter uses a secondary display (projector, TV, or LED wall) to show content to your congregation. When the output does not appear as expected, this guide will help you identify and fix the problem.

Display Not Detected

If WayPresenter does not list your projector or secondary monitor in the output settings, the issue is usually at the operating system or hardware level.

Verify the Physical Connection

  • Confirm the cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, or USB-C) is securely connected at both ends.
  • If using an adapter (e.g., USB-C to HDMI), try a different adapter or cable to rule out a hardware fault.
  • Check that the projector or display is powered on and set to the correct input source.

Verify the Operating System Sees the Display

  • Windows: Right-click the desktop and select Display settings. Your secondary display should appear as a second rectangle. If it does not, click Detect. If it still does not appear, check your graphics driver.
  • macOS: Go to System Settings > Displays. The secondary display should be listed. If not, try disconnecting and reconnecting the cable, or click Detect Displays while holding the Option key.
  • Linux: Open your display settings or run xrandr in a terminal to list connected outputs. If the display is not listed, check your graphics driver and cable.

Once the operating system recognizes the display, restart WayPresenter. The new display should appear in Settings > Display > Output.

Wrong Monitor Selected

WayPresenter sends its output to whichever display is selected in the output settings. If content is appearing on your operator screen instead of the projector, or on the wrong projector in a multi-display setup, the output assignment needs to be changed.

  1. Open Settings > Display > Output.
  2. Review the list of detected displays. Each display is shown with its name, resolution, and a number corresponding to the operating system's display numbering.
  3. Select the correct display for your output.
  4. Click Identify to flash a number on each connected display so you can confirm which is which.
  5. Click Apply.

If you regularly switch between setups (e.g., a portable system used at different venues), WayPresenter remembers display configurations by name and will attempt to restore the correct mapping automatically.

Resolution Issues

Mismatched resolution between WayPresenter's output and your display can cause stretched, cropped, or blurry content.

Setting the Correct Resolution

  1. Open Settings > Display > Output.
  2. Check the Resolution dropdown for the selected display. It should match the native resolution of your projector or screen.
  3. Common projector resolutions are 1920x1080 (Full HD), 1280x720 (HD), and 1024x768 (XGA).
  4. If the correct resolution is not listed, check your operating system's display settings to ensure the display is configured at its native resolution.

Aspect Ratio Mismatch

If content appears stretched or has black bars, the aspect ratio may not match.

  • Most modern projectors use 16:9. Ensure WayPresenter's output is set to a 16:9 resolution.
  • Older projectors may use 4:3. Use a 4:3 resolution like 1024x768 or 1400x1050.
  • LED walls and non-standard screens may have custom aspect ratios. Use the Custom Resolution option in WayPresenter to match exactly.

Blank Output

If the output display is connected and selected but shows a black or blank screen, try the following.

  1. Check that output is enabled: In WayPresenter's control bar, look for the Output toggle button. If it shows as disabled (greyed out), click it to enable output.
  2. Check for a blank slide: The current slide in WayPresenter may be intentionally blank (e.g., a "clear" or "black" command). Click on a content item to display it.
  3. Restart the output: Go to Settings > Display > Output and click Restart Output. This reinitializes the display connection without restarting the entire application.
  4. Check graphics driver: An outdated or buggy graphics driver can cause blank output. Update your graphics driver to the latest version from the manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel).

Text Too Small or Too Large

If text on the projected display is not the right size, it is usually a theme or resolution issue rather than a bug.

Adjusting Text Size

  • Theme settings: Open your active theme in the theme editor and adjust the font size under Typography. Preview changes on the output display in real time.
  • Resolution scaling: If your operating system has display scaling enabled (common on high-DPI screens), it may affect WayPresenter's output. Set the output display to 100% scaling in your operating system's display settings for the most predictable results.
  • Maximum lines setting: In the theme editor under Layout, the Maximum lines setting controls how much text fits on a single slide. Fewer lines means larger text per line.

Display Configuration Checklist

Use this checklist to quickly verify your display setup before a service.

  1. The projector or display is powered on and showing a signal.
  2. The operating system recognizes the display in its display settings.
  3. The display is set to its native resolution in the operating system.
  4. WayPresenter's output is assigned to the correct display in Settings > Display > Output.
  5. The Output toggle in WayPresenter's control bar is enabled.
  6. A test slide displays correctly on the projected screen.
  7. Text is legible from the back of the room.
